Mobile TV Studio for Young People (Ages 9–14) | 2008 Journalism Workshop | Academy of Friends
This video presents the Mobile TV Studio project originally delivered in Romania for young people aged 9–14. The initiative was first developed under the name “Pupaza din Tei” as a children-led journalism and cultural project, later evolving into what is now known as Academy of Friends. The programme brought journalism workshops directly into schools, where students analysed newspaper content, wrote their own scripts, presented inside a mobile TV studio and received recognition for their work. While supported by a small team of adult mentors, the project was largely written, organised and presented by children themselves. This educational model is now intended to be introduced in the United Kingdom through Academy of Friends CIC, subject to partnerships and funding. Our aim is to create opportunities for young people in the UK to develop media literacy, confidence and communication skills through structured journalism workshops that empower youth voice and initiative.

"Pupaza din Tei" Children’s Festival 2005 - Realitatea TV News Report from Romania
This Realitatea TV news report covers the “Pupaza din Tei” Children’s Festival in Romania, a unique journalistic and cultural project created and led by children, under the guidance of a small team of adults. Inspired by the famous Romanian story by Ion Creangă, where the hoopoe in the linden tree would wake young Nică early in the morning, the “Pupaza din Tei” newspaper follows the same spirit. Just as the hoopoe once awakened Nică, this children-led publication aims to awaken today’s young generation — encouraging them to think, express themselves, and take initiative. The entire journalistic project and festival were written, organised and presented by children, who worked as reporters, editors and presenters, supported by mentors who provided guidance while allowing young voices to lead. This report highlights a powerful example of youth creativity, responsibility and active participation in community life.
Pupaza din Tei – Romania’s Child-Led News Project 2001 (TV Demo)
This video presents Pupăza din Tei – Romania’s Child-Led News Project (TV Demo 2001), an early example of youth-led journalism and media education. Originally developed in Romania under the name Pupăza din Tei (The hoopoe in the linden tree), the project brought together children who wrote articles, conducted interviews, presented reports and actively participated in producing their own newspaper and media content. Guided by a small team of mentors, the children led the creative and editorial process, gaining confidence, responsibility and communication skills. Inspired by Ion Creangă’s well-known story, where the hoopoe in the linden tree would awaken young Nică each morning, the initiative aimed to awaken a new generation, encouraging children to think independently, express themselves freely and take initiative within their communities. Since then, the project has evolved, and the name has changed to Academy of Friends TV, continuing the same mission of empowering children through journalism, creativity and community engagement.
